Why Understanding Your Dog’s Breed Matters
I often receive calls from clients asking if I can train their Golden Retrievers to become guard dogs. But how is that possible? Golden Retrievers are bred to be friendly companions and retrievers. Training them as guard dogs goes against their natural instincts and temperament.
Imagine if someone forced you to give up something you love and shaped you into doing something you hate. That’s exactly how it feels when we try to mold a dog into a role that doesn’t suit its breed or character. Yet, many people still expect their Corgis to act like Dobermans.
This often happens because owners don’t understand their dogs or what they need before getting them. Some people buy their dogs while window shopping, picking the cutest doggy face in the shop, whip out their credit card, make payment, and bring them home. They are not prepared for the actual realities of owning and handling a dog.
Owning a dog is like preparing for a new baby. If you could have a baby without nine months of preparation, how ready would you really be? Without proper preparation and understanding, problems are bound to surface later.
