What Is Dog Training?
Dog training is about communication, trust, and guidance. It’s teaching a dog to understand what you expect of them, helping them make the right choices, and keeping them safe and confident in the world around them. It involves using environmental cues, reinforcement, and consequences to shape desirable actions while reducing unwanted behaviors. Training helps dogs understand what is expected of them and how to respond reliably in different contexts, from everyday life to specialized tasks (Pryor 42).
Effective training relies on consistency, timing, and clear communication. Positive reinforcement encourages good behaviors, while appropriate corrections or management strategies reduce behaviors that are unsafe or undesirable. The goal is to develop reliable, well adjusted, and confident dogs that can interact safely with humans and other animals (McGreevy and Thomson 105).
